Gouache on paper

58.4 x 78.7 cm

January 17: 1988

January 17: 1988 was painted by Patrick Heron to replace a favourite gouache (PH73G01 APRIL IX: 1973) that he had sold. The artist’s daughter Susanna received an account of the purchase from the buyer, a landscape architect. He explained that it was a favourite painting of Patrick’s which he kept in the studio at Eagles Nest. Patrick was persuaded to part with it as the purchaser and his wife had saved it from a flood when they were house sitting for Patrick while he was in Australia, and they had set their hearts on it. He advised Patrick on the garden at Eagles Nest after the great frost of 1987 and subsequently became a friend.
